UNM Arena Expansion

Boom mounted and remotely powered drills were used to install piles on a complex and highly congested expansion project at the University of New Mexico’s “The Pit” basketball arena.

At the ground level expansion of concession and concourse areas, piles were installed to support new column loads. Within “The Pit” itself, additional capacity and 45 degree shear wall piles were installed at existing column locations that were receiving additional loads from new mezzanine and box seating levels.

Collapsible loose silty sands required piles to be drilled using the simultaneous drill and grout method. All piles were designed with 45kip service loads. In total two-hundred and two 4” diameter piles were installed to an average depth of 30 feet and reinforced with 38mm all-thread Geo Drill bar.

The general contractor, Flintco, maintained NM OSHA Gold STAR certification. All subcontractors were required to adhere to these standards.
