Helical piers are used in new construction when challenging soil conditions prevent a building’s foundation from being built in a traditional manner. They also are used to stabilize a house’s foundation that has settled or failed. Helical piers transfer the load of the house from the unpredictable surface soil into deeper, sturdier earth. They are used in tension applications, such as tower guide wires and tie-back retaining walls, and in compression applications, like settlement repair, lighting poles, and tower foundations.
Helical piers work similarly to a screw bored into wood. When they are rotated into the soil, the helix plates welded onto the tubular or square-shaped shaft help stabilize the structure above ground.
Advantages of Helical Piers:
Resistance piers, also known as push piers, are very strong cylindrical steel tubes used in conjunction with steel brackets to lift a sagging or settling foundation. Push piers usually are installed vertically but can be installed at an angle if necessary to stabilize a foundation. Resistance piers support light loads, some heavy loads, and are used in underpinnings.
